Cascaded MMIs

Cascaded MMIs allow for power splitting to be scaled flexibly without the need for more difficult and potentially sensitive designs. For example, a series of 1x10 MMIs could be used to retrieve a signal that had been reduced in power by an order of magnitude. To drop two orders of magnitude simply cascade two MMIs rather than build a 1x100 MMI!

Cascaded devices greatly benefit from using sub-devices to improve efficiency.
