A busy day for our team today [26 Feb 2025] as our founder and CEO Dr Dominic Gallagher entertains at University College London for a guest lecture while Alex in our communications team hosts an Introduction to Waveguides course over at Cardiff University. In this class students were hands-on with FIMMWAVE and FIMMPROP as they’re introduced to modes and waveguides with industry tools; something you can set up for your class!

With each academic licence you’re eligible for 10 additional licences to be used in the classroom for 4 months of the year. We’re always happy to share our decades of teaching material for such classes and can even help host on special occasions.

'Being part of running these courses is such a great combination of all the parts of my career I’ve liked most.

I’ve found in my background of science communication that engaging teaching resources are often abstract and show little resemblance to what it's like to actually work in the industry you teach; I’ve asked myself ‘how is this virtual quiz experience I’ve designed anything like what being a physicist actually is?’

With Photon Design’s courses though I’ve been teaching with world class tools. I've found myself instinctively reaching to scribble diagrams to illustrate a point to my class only to remember, I can simply show a simulation in real time to show the effect. 

I’ve found a rewarding engagement from the courses and hands-on sessions I've hosted. Knowing that the tools our students are learning from are used in their university’s cutting edge research, at start-ups, and at the world’s biggest companies I feel is a real motivator; and far more authentic than making a quiz to be done on their phones.
